Travel options

Ferry, Air or Automobile, you choose!

Nova Scotia is  approximately 6 hours by air from the United Kingdom and Europe. So it is possible to set off in the morning and be in the cottage in time for dinner.*

If you would like to visit U.S.A. while you are in Nova Scotia, ferry crossings to Bar Harbor and Portland Maine, both in New England, from  Yarmouth in  Nova Scotia, are operated by the CAT, which is a high speed seacat ferry.

Return flights to Halifax Nova Scotia, can be purchased from  Canadian Affair, who offer flights with Thomas Cook airlines and give great car rental rates. When hiring your car, be sure to get cruise control for the long stretches of well maintained and extremely quiet roads. In the summer you will also appreciate air conditioning in your vehicle, as the temperatures can get well into the 80s.

Visit the Halifax International Airport web site for more flight options

Light Aircraft

If you have the use of a light aircraft, you can fly direct to Digby Municipal airport (please see the airport web site for further information) or you may even be able to put down on Lake Midway (subject to local regulations and floats!). The lake is over a mile long and approximately a quarter of a mile wide and is only occasionally used by water craft. We do not know if this is feasible, but have been told by one local pilot that he would not hesitate to use Lake Midway. We would welcome any feedback on this subject.

Wildlife and Relaxation

At Innisfree cottage, you will find nature at its finest and most exciting. Nova Scotia is a wild and friendly place which can be enjoyed from the comfort of our 100 year old well equipped and cosy country cottage.

Chipmunk     Blue Jay     Squirrel

Don't forget to feed the local resident Chipmunks, Blue Jays, Squirrels and Hummingbirds.

You are likely to see porcupines, racoons, rabbits, chipmunks and squirrels in the garden. In the woods at the back of the cottage, evidence of the elusive white tailed deer can be seen. Hummingbirds, American finches and blue jays feed from the bird feeders and a brilliant red flash of red means the cardinal bird is around. Turkey vultures and, if you are lucky, a bald eagle sometimes ride the thermals overhead. In summer the hummingbirds have a feast on the nectar from the touch-me-not flowers (centre), and in winter when the flowers die back, they follow the sun south to Mexico, returning to Nova Scotia in May. The lake currently has a family of beavers living on it and there are signs of their gnawing near the lake.

At dusk you can sit on the garden furniture on the deck and may hear coyotes calling to each other.

At night, see the bats circling, catching insects and listen out for the racoon tapping as he tries to walk through the glass of the kitchen door, his clown face peering in!

The cottage is well placed for all of the local attractions such as whale watching, beautiful beaches and the busy fishing county town and port of Digby with its famous lobster, clams and other  "fruit de mer".

There will always be plenty to do for young and old alike, whether you enjoy exploring Nova Scotia's rich heritage, having a quiet meal at a waterside retreat, enjoying shopping at great prices, relaxing on the sun beds in the garden in summer, or cross country skiing in winter.

The frogs start to squeak around Lake Midway in April or May. Click here to listen to a recording made on the front step of the house on an evening one May.

Digby Town

The cottage is 15 minutes from Digby, which has banks, a shopping mall, large super markets, including Wal-Mart, and  all manner of other shops a night club, restaurants and bars. The wharf is home to the picturesque fishing fleet and nearby is the fishing museum. There is also a car ferry terminal, just outside the main town, for trips to St. John in New Brunswick.  The cottage is 20 minutes from the main route to southern Nova Scotia, route 101, and just over an hour to Yarmouth, where a short or catamaran journey will take you to Bar Harbor or Portland Maine in the USA.

The  cottage, "Innisfree" has been inspected by the Municipality of Digby and the Nova Scotia Tourist Board, who have licensed the accommodation, which has three comfortable bedrooms, (two double and a twin) and sleeps 6.

Digby Neck was a notorious spot in days gone by for ship wrecks and also had its very own witches who lived at Thomas Cove, which is over North Mountain behind the cottage.
