Nova Scotia is approximately 5 to 6 hours by air from the United Kingdom and Europe, so it is possible to set off in the morning and be at the cottage in time for dinner.* Travel from the USA entails a short flight to Halifax, or a drive via New Brunswick and the Saint John to Digby Ferry. St John also has an airport.
Return flights to Halifax Nova Scotia from the U.K. can be purchased from Canadian Affair, who offer flights with Thomas Cook airlines and Air Transat. Car hire is best obtained from netflights and if you book an economy car from the airport, you normally get a free upgrade to a mid-sized vehicle.
When hiring, be sure to get cruise control for the long stretches of well maintained and extremely quiet roads. In the summer you will also appreciate air conditioning in your vehicle, as the temperatures can get well into the 80s.
Visit the Halifax International Airport web site for more flight options

* Typical journey times from Halifax International Airport to
the cottage (on Digby Neck) are less than 3 hours
and from Yarmouth to the cottage are less than 2 hours.
